A furnace that turns on, runs for a few minutes, then shuts off and restarts shortly after is “short cycling” — and it’s more than just annoying. Short cycling wears out furnace components faster, wastes energy, and often leaves your home never quite reaching a comfortable temperature. Here are the real causes, in order of how common they actually are.
1. A Dirty or Clogged Air Filter
This is by far the most common cause. A clogged filter restricts airflow through the furnace. Without enough air moving across the heat exchanger, the furnace overheats, trips its internal high-limit safety switch, and shuts off automatically to protect itself — then restarts once it cools down, only to overheat again. Check your filter first; if it’s visibly dirty, replace it before troubleshooting anything else.
2. An Oversized Furnace
If a furnace is too large for the space it’s heating, it can satisfy the thermostat’s temperature setting in just a few minutes, shut off, and then need to restart again shortly after as the house cools back down. This is a sizing problem from installation, not a malfunction, and it’s common in homes where a furnace was replaced without a proper load calculation.
3. A Faulty or Misplaced Thermostat
A thermostat located near a heat register, in direct sunlight, or close to a draft can read the room temperature inaccurately, telling the furnace to shut off before the house is actually warm. Miscalibrated or aging thermostats can cause the same problem even in a good location. Try replacing the batteries first, and check whether the thermostat’s placement makes sense.
4. A Failing Flame Sensor
The flame sensor confirms the burner has actually ignited. If it’s coated in carbon buildup, it can fail to detect a real flame and shut the gas valve down as a safety measure, even though the furnace is working correctly. This usually shows up as the furnace igniting, running briefly, then shutting off repeatedly. Cleaning the sensor with fine sandpaper often resolves it.
5. Restricted Exhaust Venting
A blocked flue or vent pipe — from debris, a bird’s nest, or ice in winter — prevents exhaust gases from escaping properly. Modern furnaces have safety switches that detect this and shut the unit down before it can become dangerous. 6. A Weak or Failing Blower Motor
The blower motor pulls heated air across the heat exchanger and pushes it through the ducts.
